Which professor(s) influenced your life and career the most? Explain.

By the time I decided to go back to school, I was over 40, insecure about my prospects of success, and apprehensive. My main concern (outside of my age), was my ability to pass my math related courses. I applied to community college, and was required to pass two basic algebra courses before I could take college level math courses.

I remember my level of stress as the first day approached; I had a splitting headache, and I found it difficult to think of anything else. My Algebra professor’s name was Ms. Ferguson. She quickly honed in on my fears and helped me understand what I had been doing wrong (as far as algebra was concerned). Apparently, I am the type of learner who is not able to effectively calculate math in my head; I need to write everything down before I solve equations.

I completed both levels of algebra with Ms. Ferguson. After my first semester with her, my confidence level skyrocketed! She was extremely patient and never judged me in any way. She loved her job, which ignited a love of learning in me.
